The process of airification for golf courses is not only a necessary process, but it is also hated by golfers. It need not be hated, as it is the process that allows Thoroughbred to provide the best putting surfaces in the Lexington area.
First off - WHY?
Airification does 2 important things vital to the health of putting surfaces:
The first is that it allows air to reach deep into the soil. Imagine a solid surface placed on your face, making it difficult, if not impossible, for you to have air reach your lungs.
It wouldn't be long before your health began to decline without that necessary air reaching that vital part of your anatomy, your lungs.
Airification provides the necessary path for air, as well as water and nutrients, to reach the vital part of the green, which is the root zone of the plant. This process that we call airification can be done multiple times per year, each time creating the road to healthier roots and resultingly, a better putting surface.
If you played Thoroughbred in the last year, you proabaly played sometime soon after our airifications, whether it was in the fall, like our upcoming procedure, or earlier this year, when we did our spring airification. Both times, the comments we received from golfers playing within days of the completion of the process were exceptionally positive! And the health of our greens throughout the summer and winter seasons continued to provide the putting surfaces for which Thoroughbred has come to be known.
Secondly, this process breaks up the area known as thatch. While a small amount of thatch actually benefits turf surfaces, with the delicate nature of putting surfaces, too much thatch can be detrimental. So airification, followed by top-dressing with sand, helps to break up the thatch layer to an acceptable level, once again making the putting surfaces true and consistent.
While doing our airifications, we provide golfers with a substantial discount, as you may be required to play the same 9 holes twice, or play 9 holes of airified greens with 9 holes of greens not yet processed. In any event, we will also provide you with a substantial discount to play the course again within 3 weeks, so that you can see for yourself how well the greens respond to our airification process. This is part or our way of saying "thank you" for continuing to patronize Thoroughbred while we do this necessary procedure, and also allowing us to provide our clientele with a small education about what it takes to make Thoroughbred the course it is evolving into.
